While the sweeping impact of VHÖLs 2015 masterpiece Deeper than Sky has lost nothing of its energetic appeal, drummer Aesop Dekker has of course been busy on many other playgrounds: helping Lorraine Rath und Jessica Way to make Worm Ouroboros’ third album What Gracless Dawn into the etheric mediation it is for example, or introduced us to Khorada . All these projects do not only have Dekkers multifaceted drumming in common, but also share the same high quality standards his – and really all of his VHÖL associates – name is synonymous with. So make sure you don’t miss his favorite records and recommendations for 2016!

1. Inculcator – Void Abecedary

Incredibly adept and strange sort of thrash/death high weirdness. Adventurous and yet catchy. Definitely one for the ages.

2. White Lung – Paradise

White Lung releases an album a year it seems and they just get better. Frantic but melodic punk and one of the best guitarists alive. Never tire of their work.

3. Hammers of Misfortune – Dead Revolution

Best Hammers album since [amazon_link id=“B001S5UFUG“ target=“_blank“ ]The Locust Years[/amazon_link]. Also notable for best cover art of the year.

4. Krypts – Remnants of Expansion

Ancient and cavernous Death/Doom. Creates a landscape of lava and blood. I want to live in this album.

SubRosa - For this We Fought the Battle of Ages5. SubRosa – For This We fought the Battle of Ages

Not as immediately enjoyable as their previous two but still miles ahead of most bands in terms of songwriting craft. I love how this band can convey so much with very little bells and whistles.

6. Witch Vomit – A Scream From the Tomb Below

I know everyone flipped over [amazon_link id=“B01I2RXIUQ“ target=“_blank“ ]Starspawn[/amazon_link] and rightly so, it’s a fantastic bit of revisionist Death Metal, but for my dollar Portland’s Witch Vomit puked forth the best orthodox DM album of 2016.

7. Eight Bells – Landless

Bleak and moody second album from former Subarachnoid Space time stretcher, Melynda Jackson. Miles ahead of their debut.

8. Obscura – Akroasis

More surprised that I loved this as much as I did than anyone. Kind of a neat modern send-up of Cynic’s [amazon_link id=“B000000H7A“ target=“_blank“ ]Focus[/amazon_link]. At times reminds me of the aural equivalent to a Philip Druillet drawing.

9. Death in Rome – Hitparade

Yes, kind of a novelty album, but infinitely gorgeous and beautiful net-folk renditions of vapid pop songs. Every part of me should hate this but just can’t. Found myself listening to it a lot this year.

10. Void Omnia – Dying Light

Void Omnia’s debut is a frill-free piece of traditional Black Metal. Melodic, spacious, and reminds me of some of the best French Black Metal of the past, but these guys are from my hometown of Oakland. It’s been a pleasure watching these guys develop and eventually drop the best BM release of 2016 in my opinion.
