Chris Cresswell – Feel
Nach den beiden digitalen, ohnedies ebenfalls sehr reduziert inszenierten Singles To the Wind und Gather My Thoughts aus dem vergangenen Jahr findet Chris Cresswell mit Feel sogar noch intimer zum minimalistischen One Week Record zurück.
Dass seit seinem spartanisch gehaltenen, spontan mit Joey Cape im Home Studio entstandenen Acoustic-Solodebüt auch bereits sechs Jahre vergangen sind, lässt sich freilich mit dem hohen Arbeitspensum erklären, dass der noch 32 Jährige Cresswell mit seiner Stammband (Flatliners), Supergroups (Scorpios), Auftragsarbeiten und Aushilfsjobs (Hot Water Music) zu bewältigen hat.
Diese übergeordneten Themen – das Voranschreiten der Zeit und damit verbundene Älterwerden im Allgemeinen sowie das Leben als Musiker im Speziellen – reflektiert Feel als standortbestimmende Interimssingle, wie der Kanadier erklärt.
„Playing music for a living can cause you to live a life with blinders on. Maybe life in general is just like that at a certain age no matter what you do for a living. You’re barrelling down your own path so fast and determined, an awful lot of time can pass before you even know it. As we age, relationships become more and more crucial to our existence. We’ve all heard that “you are the company you keep”, and as time goes on we’re able to choose our own family, choose our own people, and I feel that it’s important to cultivate those relationships and allow them to continue to shape you fundamentally as a person. This song is about the simple fact of effort being paramount in a relationship, and that sometimes that effort can break down if you’re always the one out there floating in space around the people you love.“
Und weiter: „I finished writing this song at the top of the new year, recorded it a week later, and now it’s yours. Sometimes it’s easy to be nostalgic about the patient wait for new music from an artist you support. The anticipation of the entire feast can be powerful once you’ve had a bite of that first new song released to the world. I loved it then, and I still love it now. But this time I’m celebrating new music by simply delivering it. No overthinking. No musical waiting room. Just a big, bad ‘here it is and I hope you like it.’ So here it is, and I hope you like it.“
Was man Feel vorwerfen kann, ist dann eventuell genau diese unbekümmert auf sich selbst gestellte, nonchalant nebenbei daherkommende Gangart. Denn gefühltermaßen wirken die knapp dreieinhalb Minuten im Alleingang eher wie eine sanfte, ein wenig zu vergänglich auf Gewicht verzichtende Brise, die in einen Kontext weiterer (kontrastierender) Songs einen stärkeren Eindruck hinterlassen hätten können.
Nichtsdestotrotz gelingt Cresswell auch ohne Gänsehaut beim Sinnieren ein bezauberndes Kleinod. Feel ist eine romantisch und ruhig an der gefühlvoll temperierten Akustikgitarre gezupfte Nummer, melancholisch und ruhig, feingeistig und intim, sensibel und minimalistisch, verletzlich und tröstend. Mit der charismatisch einnehmenden Stimme von Cresswell vorgetragen zieht soviel Hang zum Unspektakulären sofort in den Bann und funktioniert durch die niemals zu konkreten Lyrics auch durchaus auf einer universeller Ebene.
Schade insofern in mehrerlei Hinsicht, dass Feel die einzige Nummer aus dem Hause Cresswell im Jahr 2020 bleiben soll.
