Tennis – Neutral Poetry
Tennis schicken ihrem Schwanengesang Face Down in the Garden mit Neutral Poetry: First Recordings, Unreleased Demos 2009-2010 einen Epilog hinterher, der an den Wurzeln des Debütalbums Cape Dory eine niedliche Schlaufe um die rund fünfzehnjährige Karriere des Duos bindet.
Ihre letzte Tour einleitend verabschieden sich Alaina Moore und Patrick Riley so mit einer ebenso bittersüß-nostalgischen wie stimmigen Geste – und notieren dazu:
While we were working on Face Down In The Garden, Patrick found a box of unlabeled cassette tapes in the attic. They turned out to be 4-track recordings from the earliest days of our band, including the original versions of Marathon, South Carolina and Baltimore – the songs that launched our career back in 2010. We re-recorded them for our debut LP in 2011 because we were insecure about how lo-fi they were. We tried our best to duplicate what we liked about the demos in the studio, but the re-recordings lost some of the magic-something we’ve always regretted. Though we would never write anything like this today, these demos contain aspects of ourselves I wish we hadn’t lost touch with. The youthful exuberance!
The total lack of self-consciousness! We didn’t care about doing anything the right way. All my vocals went through a guitar pedal and it sounds like I am singing to you from underground one hundred years ago. Some of these songs aren’t even songs- just outlines of ideas that hint at potential. Stumbling upon our first recordings while working on our last felt like a moment of cosmic symmetry. We decided to release Neutral Poetry alongside Face Down In The Garden as a way of bookending our career, to show the progression of our sound from first recordings to last. Neutral Poetry: First Recordings, Unreleased Demos 2009-2010 speist sich zum überwiegenden Teil aus Material, das man 2011 auf Cape Dory kennenlernen durfte – alles in einem minimalistischeren Lofi-Sound als dort, wo das Songwriting damals noch weit im surfenden Twee Pop agierte, keinen Hehl aus der Liebe zu den 50s und seinem Girlgroup-Pop machend.
Und derweil Cape Dory (Demo Version 11.03.09) hier so noch einen beinahe heavy scheppernder Twist an den Tag legt, nimmt das reduzierte Pigeon (Demo Version 08.26.09) von den Pipettes kommend bereits vorweg, dass der Weg von Tennis mal explizit zu Beach House führen sollte.
Interessanter aber sind womöglich drei bisher unbekannte Archivsichtungen: Key Largo (Demo 08.20.09) schrammelt in verwaschenen DIY-Sound aus der Garage, April and It’s Still Snowing (Demo 09.01.09) schreitet mit frühen Grizzly Bear im Hinterkopf zu Bethany Cosentino und One Day This Will Be a Good Songgg orgelt friedvoll träumend. Ein wirklich feines Abschieds-Präsent also!
