Cold War Kids – Meditations
Meditations markiert (nur wenige Monate nach der quasi-selbstbetitelten CWK EP) für die nunmehr unabhängig veröffentlichenden Veteranen der Cold War Kids den Ausdruck einer neuen Spontanität und Ungebundenheit.
„We went into the studio with Jonathan Rado on September 30 and today, October 23, the song is yours” sagt Nathan Willet und ergänzt: “We’re releasing this totally independently for the first time ever and it’s exciting to have a vision for a song, write it, record it, release it, and play it live for you all within the same month.”
Diesen motivierenden Antrieb nimmt Meditations auf. Ein bisschen Disco-Flair hier, eine für Sekundenbruchteile an Nilssons One angelehnte Melodie da. So poltern die Cold War Kids auf einem Highways Richtung Killers-Sauberkeit. Der Refrain stampft sogar explizit gut gelaunt zum Party-Stimmungsmacher und schraubt seine Hook („You/ You‘re the love I‘ve been hiding“) mit Kopfstimme in die Höhe und die Gehörgänge, macht „I could never be lonely“ zum Mantra, während ein Piano-Klimpern a la The Rapture das Tanzbein schwingt.
Das ist erst nett und eingängig, letztendlich aber viel zu reibungslos und simpel, weswegen der catchy Konsum auch schnell nerven kann.
„Meditations’ is about the daily struggle of being self-reflective and being comfortable in stillness. Through all these years of touring, the best release I have found is performing on stage. But with the highs come the lows. The rest of the day I live with my inner voice. This song is about learning to live in a relationship with yourself, to make that voice your friend and muse that accepts you and pushes you to be your best.”
Diese von Willet erklärte Tiefgründigkeit hört man Meditations insofern also zu keiner Sekunde an – was schon okay geht.
