Foo Fighters – Today’s Song
Nach ihrer Interpretation von Minor Threats I Don’t Wanna Hear It veröffentlichen die Foo Fighters mit Today’s Song eine Single, die als Momentaufnahme gleichermaßen nach vorne wie hinten blickt.
Beinahe pünktlich zum 30. Geburtstag des selbstbetitelten Band-Debüts verneigt sich Grohl in den Liner Notes nicht nur vor ehemaligen Weggefährten („It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”), sondern wird generell auf nostalgische Weise sentimental: „Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.“
Der Today’s Song selbst schaut dennoch mit einem gewissen Optimismus nach vorne, gibt sich zumindest kämpferisch: „I woke today screaming for change / I knew that I must / So, here lies a shadow / Ashes to ashes / Dust into dust/ …/ It may take a lifetime to find you/ It may take a lifetime to unwind you/ Praying there’s some way to remind you/ Two sides to a river/ Too troubled to cross/ It might take you under/ Today’s song/ We’ll drown in the middle/ Which side are you on?“.
Balladesk, melancholisch und verträumt beginnend, geht die Single nach knapp einer Minute im getragenen Tempo, hat im solide schunkelnden Alternative Rock ein latentes Oldschool Flair. Stilistisch hätten die knapp dreieinhalb Minuten der Nummer damit gut auf Here We Are gepasst. Auch, weil die Produktion – Oliver Roman hat nun von Greg Kurstin übernommen – wieder keinen wirklichen Biss, Ecken oder Kanten hat und der Mix auf zwingenden Druck verzichtet. Vor allem die Vocals wollen nicht packen und wirken als presse Grohl mit einer limitierten Intensität in seine Trademark-Komfortzone.
Dennoch kriegt einen die Melodie, der Refrain ist griffig, eingängig und gefällig, radiotauglich routiniert. Auf generische Foo Fighters-Weise einfach gut.
