Whitney – Darling
Seit Spark vertreiben sich Whitney die Zeit mit einzelnen Singles. Auf For A While und Kansas folgt deswegen die wundervolle Sommer-Nostalgie Darling – als erster tatsächlich neuer Song der Band seit 2022.
Mit der gewohnt bittersüß luftigen Leichtigkeit bewegen sich Max Kakacek und Julien Ehrlich ziemlich genau ein Jahrzehnt nach den Aufnahmen zu ihrem Debütalbum mit einer schwindelfreien Trittsicherheit in ihrer angestammten Komfortzone, zurück im organischen Klangbild. Darling plätschert romantisch, hell und soft so angenehm und einnehmend in der verträumten Whitney-Sehnsucht, in der aller Wehmut wie eine Streicheleinheit klingt: „Along the way I had my doubts/ And I struggled to put you down/ I thought all our problems were justified/ My best friends told me otherwise/ Darling why’d you punish me if you didn’t think I deserved it?/ You’ve had your share of sympathy/ Baby these tables are turning/ …./ If everything was meant to be/ Why are thеse tables a’ turning?“
Passend zu dieser sich lösenden Aufbruchstimmung öffnet sich Darling in der letzten Minute und tänzelnd beschwingter – wiewohl immer noch dezent – durch seinen milden Soundkosmos.
Dass die Spielzeit mit knapp drei Minuten dezitiert pointiert angelegt ist, kommt übrigens nicht von ungefähr: „There’s something to be said for a two minute-or-less gem that aims for the heart. Songs like “Gonna Hurry” by Dolly Parton and “Take Care” by Big Star come to mind — poignantly written goodbyes emphasized by the fact that both songs are over as quick as they started. In the case of “Darling,” the song transitions into a second act that serves to accept a goodbye instead of leaving it up in the air, but we think the song ultimately feels like it’s over too soon in the best way possible.“
Das kommt – näher beim hauseigenen tollen Standard als beim Instant Klassiker – ungefähr hin.
