Amenra – De Toorn
2024 waren Amenra mit Live at Rock Werchter 2023 sowie dem Soundtrack zu Skunk quasi auf Nebenschauplätzen ihrer Diskografie beschäftigt. Nun stellt das EP-Doppel aus De Toorn und With Fang and Claw jedoch die Weichen für die Zeit nach De Doorn.
Das belgische Kollektiv tut dies, indem es zurückblickt. „With De Toorn we finish what we have started with De Doorn in 2019,“ erklärt etwa Colin H. Van Eeckhout. „We came as close to our cultural heritage as we possibly could and offered the world a glance of where we come from. With the artwork reached back to the early beginnings of the band, MASS I. Aline Gorsen interpretation of the art propelled us in a world forlorn.“
Gitarrist Mathieu Vandekerckhove ergänzt: „With De Toorn, we carry forward the spirit of De Doorn, delving deeper into the raw emotions of grief, wrath, and transformation. It is a continuation of the ritual, a step further into the fire. At the same time, With Fang And Claw harks back to the essence of Mass I, embracing the primal force that defined our beginnings.“
Lennart Bossu: „The track ‚Heden‘ grew very organically while playing together in the rehearsal room and it set the tone for the rest of ‚De Doorn‘ and ‚De Toorn,‘ so it’s definitely a track that is special to us.”
Besagte Nummer pocht abgedämpft im schummrigen Licht, verlässt sich lange beinahe alleine auf Bass und Kickdrum, wo Van Eeckhout in die heimelige Dunkelheit einer somnambulen Lauerstellung rezitiert. Der Raum und die Redaktion erzeugen einen Sog, existentialistisch. Die dichte Atmosphäre ist von bedrückender Schönheit, entschleunigt und nachdenklich, derweil sich Gitarren heimlich immer melodischer verweben. Heden setzt sich mit Gesang in Gang – und platzt nach rund zehn Minuten für sein finales Viertel im Post Metal-Strom auf. Der Kontrast der unverrückbaren Sanftmut von heavy Riff-Kaskaden sowie einer fast panischen Hysterie der Vocals geht letztlich in beschwörender Geste auf: Großes Kino in der Amenra-Komfortzone.
Gleiches gilt an sich auch für De Toorn (Talisman), das zum Marsch der Drums noch dynamischer durch eine Western-Stimmung als Panorama für das Spoken Word-Szenario schreitet. Amenra zögern die praktisch unausweichliche Detonation im Fluss gefühlt geduldiger hinaus, doch es folgt eine allzu typische Klimax. Was für sich genommen freilich nicht so schlimm wäre. Doch dass beide Nummern der 26 Minuten von De Toorn demselben Muster folgen, gibt dem Material ist ein unnötiges Gefühl der gleichförmigen Schablonenhaftigkeit. Dennoch, mit Fanbrille aufgerundet:
