„Bleed it out! Bleed it out! Bleed it out!“, truly: few other records in 2014 mistreaded their listeners as adamant as White Suns 'Totem', this unapologetic balancing-act between the extremes, that bestowed the California based label The Flenser with one of their most mercyless highlights of their year not poor in highlights. And with their third album being an exceptional case, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the list for the Heavy Pop advent calender by the Brooklyn three-piece is of the unorthodox kind.
After the two consecutive successes '‘Im Schwindel‘‘ and 'Die Unsichtbaren‘, 2014 had to be endured without a new album by Messer, but fortunately not without other releases: while Record Store Day ’14 showed the groups changeableness with 'TCM Tones‘, last months 'Ein Film ist zuende, nur ein Film‘ succeeded with its balancing act between art piece and driving rock improvisation. Either way: no Heavy Pop Advent calender without being kicked off by Messer!
Wolfgang Möstl lässt keine Zeit um das Ende von Killed by 9V Batteries zu bedauern, vor allem nicht sich selbst: Melt Downer sind bereits gegründet, das Debütalbum von Goldsoundz ausgeliefert und neben gefühlten drölfzig anderen beackerten Projekten geht es mit Sex Jams bald wieder ins Studio. Davor tobt er sich aber noch mit Mile Me Deaf an zahlreichen Fronten aus.

The Canadian Profound Lore Records is well known for its tasteful roster, but sometimes even their high quality list of releases has definite highlights - such as the third album of the Salt Lake City doom outfit SubRosa. 'More Constant Than The Gods' as of now marks the high-point in the bands œuvre: six beautiful monoliths, complex, varied and bearing a seldomly seen elemental force. Bassist Christian Creek took his time to participate in the HeavyPop Advent calendar 2013, and tell us about his favourite records of this past year.
Messer sind mittels des brillianten 'Im Schwindel' über furiose Livekonzerte durch 2013 gesurft um letztendlich beim überragenden Zweitwerk und Hitmanifest 'Die Unsichtbaren' anzukommen. Die Münsteraner machen also weiterhin alles richtig - und beweisen nebenbei auch abseits der eigenen Platten Geschmack und Trittsicherheit, indem sie beinahe schon traditionell auch dieses Jahr den Heavypop-Adventskalender eröffnen.
Thurston Moore rockt nach dem immer noch unglaublichen Ehe-aus mit Kim Gordon mitsamt neuem Bandprojekt wieder auf die hohe See des Indierocks. Ureigene Teritorien verlässt der Sonic Youth-Gründer dabei nicht, neue Ufer kommen aber zumindest in Sicht. Letztendlich nebensächlich, wenn der Weg durch stürmische Gewässer ein derart aufregender ist.
