Even more impressive: Spirit Adrift is the brainchild of sole member Nate Garrett, who expressly underlines his capability here with stellar songwriting, crushing instrumental skills and an sheer excellent vocal performance. So thanks a thousand times for the hint, Khemmis! And while you let the 5 songs on Chained to Oblivion majestically creep under your skin, take some time to reflect on Sprit Adrift’s final account of 2016.
On Hunted, Khemmis can keep all the promises their formidable debut Absolution gave 15 months ago, and let fans of Pallbearer and Crypt Sermon alike lick their tongues: nobody in 2016 managed to bridge the distance of epic traditional doom and grand melodies better than the band from Denver, CO. Thus it comes as no surprise, that the four-piece managed to storm the upper ranks oft he end oft he year charts by Decibel magazine. Hard to tell, to which heights the rapidly evolving Khemmis might rise in the years to come. But it sure will be a pleasure to witness.
Simplified, black Rock’n’Roll to the bones is what the press release already told us very apt about Hodja in times of their debut The Band, but what it didn’t tell us, was with how much soul, gospel, blues and feeling the multinational band charges their sound up with. Besides Reverend Shine Snake Oil Co. some might think about Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart, but in the end, the three-piece is cooking their own soup, and makes albums, that feel as if you’re right their with them, participating in their recording voodoo-sessions. This years Halos walks along that line consequently, and manages to effortlessly shake out some immediate sweating hits like Gazelles. And as soon, as Hodja slow down a bit, and draw back into invincible melancholic songs like Broken Engines, the gem Halos becomes more than the sum of ist parts.
10 Jahre nach dem so spaßigen wie nur bedingt hörbaren Cover-Rundumschlag Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics serviert die Institution aus Hoboken mit Murder in the Second Degree 27 neue Interpretationen von Fremdkompositionen (sowie ein Mega-Medley), um dem Independent-Radiosender WFMU aus New Jersey unter die Arme zu greifen. Bei dieser ohne Scheuklappen umhertigernden Hatz stellt sich nur die Frage: Wohin eigentlich zuerst schauen?
Der finstere Hardcore von Old Lines war immer schon explizit politisch. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Will Potter auf To Build a Fire erreicht dieser allerdings in seiner Konsequenz noch einmal eine ganz neue Dimension.

Wo jedes Studioalbum neue Facetten des englischen Prog-Meisters freilegt, entlässt "An Evening with Steven Wilson" abseits der erwartbar makellosen, bis ins Detail durchkomponierten Perfektion in Sachen instrumentaler und inszenatorischer Virtuosität ebenfalls mit einer überraschenden Erkenntnis: Der alterslos wirkende 48 Jährige präsentiert sich im Orpheum entwaffnend nonchalant als erstaunlich amüsanter Zeitgenosse.
Eine weniger chaotische, publicityperfektioniert impulsive Veröffentlichungsgeschichte hätte man sich kaum ausdenken können; und nichts hätte optimaler zum wahnwitzigen 'The Life of Pablo' gepasst. Stand der Dinge: Unzählige Terminverschiebungen, Artwork- und Titelwechsel, gecancelte Vorabsongs, eine an Absurdität kaum zu überbietende Releaseparty und aufgesetzte Twitterproduktionen später ist das siebente Kanye West-Werk da - zumindest in seiner vorübergehenden Form -, aber entgegen aller Ankündigungen eher nicht das beste Album aller Zeiten.
