Letztendlich haben sich Gnarwolves doch breitschlagen lassen und nach dem eindrucksvollen EP-Marathon der letzten Jahre sowie einem spontanen Abstecher in die Welt der Bierbrauerei als aktuell wahrscheinlich herausragendster Hitgarant in der Schnittstelle aus Pop- und Skate-Punk endlich ihr Full Lenght Debut in die Läden gebracht. Was das Trio aus Brighton für den Heavy Pop Adventskalender wiederum für Platten empfehlen kann, erzählten sie beim Interview ihm Rahmen ihres Wien-Gastspiels.
After the impressing EP marathon of the past years and a spontaneus detour into the business of brewing, Gnarwolves – probably the most outstanding hit machine on the gateway from pop to skate punk – let themselves be talked around to releasing their first full lenght. In our interview during their visit to Vienna, the Brighton three piece recommended us some records for the Heavy Pop advent calendar.
2014 has been a great year for Metal in generel, and Doom specifically. With their debut on Napalm Records, 'Blood Eagle' Conan achieve their spot on the podium almost effortless, and edge out the qualities of the already fantastic 'Monnos': six songs, six kicks to the face, processed into the homogenic context of their depressingly spotless discography. On day 14 of the Heavy Pop advent calendar, the doom masters tell us what’s spinning on their record tables.
2014 war ein herausragendes Jahr für den Metal im Allgemeinen und den Doom im ganz Speziellen. Conan erringen sich mit ihrem Napalm Records-Einstand 'Blood Eagle' allerdings geradezu mühelos einen Treppchenplatz im Genrekader und toppen die Qualitäten des bereits so großen 'Monnos' noch einmal: sechs Songs, sechs Bretter; aufbereitet im homogensten Gesamtkontext der jetzt schon erdrückend fehlerfreien Discographie der Engländer. Was bei den Doom-Meistern unterdessen am Plattenteller rotiert hat, erzählt die Band am 14. Tag des Heavy Pop Adventskalender.
Okay, what kind of reckless style amalgam ist he opening title track? The mercilessly slaying 'Schnaiserkitt'? How epic in scope is the wave breaking 'Valhalla'? Fjort actually need no more than these three songs to leave the listener speechless, but they do it another seven times. Close to nine months after the release of 'D’accord' we still marvel at This Charming Man for their 6th signing sense; at the enormous explosion in performance, that wasn’t to be expected in this magnitude after the very promising introductory-round of 'Demontage', or that this record has indeed been mangled out of their instruments by a three-piece wrecking ball.
First you may think: writing about Black Map of course means to write about Dredg, Far and The Trophy Fire, if only because „…And We Explode“ bears trademarks of the three other bands Mark Engles, Chris Robyn und Ben Flanagan are involved with. But it comes as a bit of a surprise, how effortless the three-headed powerhouse succeeds in combining the straight walk in direction of atmospheric alternative rock, the constant flirt with grounded stadium-sound and the steadfast traction of meaty hits. And yeah, in the end actually it works perfectly without even mentioning their other prominent playgrounds.
Man ist eingangs durchaus verleitet zu behaupten: über Black Map zu schreiben, bedeutet irgendwo bis zu einem gewissen Grad auch Dredg, Far und The Trophy Fire erwähnen zu müssen - tatsächlich finden sich auf '..And We Explode' dann auch durchaus zahlreiche Charakteristika der drei anderen Bands von Mark Engles, Chris Robyn und Ben Flanagan. Wie mühelos das dreiköpfige Powerhouse den straighten Gang in Richtung atmosphärischer Alternative Rock, den permanente Flirt mit der bodenständigen Stadiontauglichkeit und den unentwegten Zug zum gehaltvollen Hit zelebriert, das überrascht dann allerdings nicht nur in seiner Konsequenz - sondern funktioniert im Grunde letztendlich auch komplett ohne Erwähnung der prominenten Stammbands.

2014 couldn’t have started better for KMPFSPRT: „Jugend Mutiert“ easily lived up to the high expectations euphoric concert reviews and the „Das ist doch kein Name für ‚ne Band“ EP were suggesting. Close to eleven months later, the albums punkr rock hits lost nothing of their pressure and vigor. It doesn’t surprise, thatt 2015 seems to be off to an equally good start: the split single with Boysetsfire is ready to go, looks amazing, and serves a good cause. For the time being, guitar player David gives off some recommendations for 2014.
