Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Kayo Dot

Toby Driver already has an idea where the next album will bring his band. Listening to their last album ‚Coffins on Io‚, the most headstrong pop album of 2014, which Kayo Dot used to invent themselves anew, to expand their horizon over to spacestations floating trapped in an 80s timeloop, one hast o think: anything is possible. Until then Mr. Driver tells us which records accompanied him through the year 2014 – and we hope to see him and his band in Europe in 2015.

I always have a bit of trouble making these lists because it’s difficult to remember what I listened to and what even came out in 2014. So, I’m going to keep this list to only three albums. These are the ones I listened to and loved most, this year. In no particular order.

It’s probably a little gauche to put my own album on this list, but as it’s obviously the album I listened to the most and spent the most time with this year it probably belongs here. After all, why make music that you’re not going to love, yourself?
Kayo Dot is still, in principle, an experimental band, and this record is the result of a successful experiment by the band to focus on synth production, vocal extroversion, and the sexualization of the hermetic aesthete. It was super fun to make, and in the process of doing so, listen to probably 5,000 times.

Blonde Redhead – ‚[amazon_link id=“B00KVVDIDO“ target=“_blank“ ]Barragán[/amazon_link]‘
Blonde Redhead has been one of my favorite bands for a very long time. From their fifth album (2000’s ‚Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons‘) forward, every album has had a pretty big difference in sound, always able to establish a palpable atmosphere brilliantly while being adventurous and deeply moving. They’re such a good example of a rock band that can exist for decades, remaining compelling and relevant, constantly reinventing themselves but always sounding like themselves. Obviously they’re a huge inspiration to me.

Wreck and Reference – ‚[amazon_link id=“B00JRSK5L0″ target=“_blank“ ]Want[/amazon_link]‘
Such a cool overall sound in general, great writing, great performances, great intensity. It’s awesome to hear the future of heavy rock music existing in a place that appeals to a metal aesthetic but doesn’t involve guitars.
