One thing Duane Denison definitely did not experience in 2013 was boredom. There was the (once again) reunion of noiserock-overlords The Jesus Lizard or the foundation of supergroup The Unsamble (featuring Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten and Silver Jews' Brian Kotzur) – but first and foremost there was 'Oddfellows', the might-as-well-be comeback and possibly best work by the even superer group Tomahawk. And thanks to Denison's varied choices for his records of the year and the HeavyPop Advent calendar, there's no place for boredom here, either.
Was Beatles-Songtitel mit Hollywood-Stars zu tun haben? So genau klärten das Hidden by the Grapes auf 'I'm Sorry Tschem' (digital übrigens wie immer nach "Name Your Price"-Prinzip, auf Vinyl liebevoll aufgemacht) vielleicht auch nicht auf, viel wichtiger ist aber ohnedies die Erkenntnis die das Grazer Trio zwischen den elf Tracks auffährt: um den heimischen Noiserock braucht man sich wahrlich keine Sorgen zu machen!
Denn nur ein Jahr nach 'If Radios Spoke With their Hearts' kratzen Christian Steiner, Richard Kahlbacher und Bernhard Jammerbund schon wieder vollkommen unangestrengt den nächsten Genre-Grenzgänger in der Sollbruchstelle aus kantiger Widerborstigkeit und heimtückischer Melodieverliebthaut aus ihren Instrumenten. Vor internationalen Referenzen muss sich das Ergebnis jedenfalls zu keinem Zeitpunkt fürchten. Day 18 of the HeavyPop Advent calendar brings us France's most intense band. Usually friends of rapid-fire releases (three and a half records over the course of five years) Lyon's Celeste took nearly three years to meticulously craft their Opus Magnum 'Animale(s)', and every second of work shows on their pitch-black conceptual work of art. Never before did Celeste sound more detailed, more coherent – in short: better. It was hard to imagine after the already outstanding 'Morte(s) Nee(s)', but Celeste outdid themselves again.
So ganz ohne Sorgenfalten hat man dem ersten Melt-Banana Album seit knapp sechs Jahren, dazu dem ersten in Duo-Besetzung samt Drumcomputer und eingefügten Bassspuren, vielleicht nicht entgegengesehen. Aber was machen Sängerin Yako und Ausnahmegitarrist Agata? Legen als siebentes Studiowerk einfach eines der stärksten Werke der Bandgeschichte vor - 'Fetch' ist nichts weniger als ein brillantes Melt-Banana Feuerwerk der Extraklasse! Da stört eigentlich nur die Befürchtung bis zum nächsten Album wieder über ein halbes Jahrzehnt warten zu müssen. Einstweilen blicken die beiden Japaner am 17. Tag des Heavypop Adventskalender auf das Jahr 2013 zurück...und auch in die Zukunft.

And singer Yasuko and genius Guitarist Agata? Release 'Fetch' one of their best albums so far, a Melt-Banana fireworks extravaganza, with the only downside being that the next album may again be away half a decade. On day 17 of the HeavyPop Advent calender the Japanese cult outfit tells us about their favourite records of 2013 – and beyond.
In the light of his band Disappears not only releasing the 'Kone'-EP that rose expectations for 2013, but consequently lifting their sound onto the next level with their following album 'Era' , Brian Case telling us about his favourite records of this past year is especially interesting. "Their best album so far" is the consensus on 'Era' elsewhere - which can only be repeated on day 13 of the Heavy Pop Advent calendar.
Sex Jams provozieren mit ihrem poppigen Noiserock Vergleiche zu Sonic Youth oder Pavement und lassen Musikerkollegen Sätze wie "Dies ist eine der coolsten Bands, die ich kenne" sagen. Vor allem mit ihrem Zweitwerk 'Trouble, Honey' hat die (nicht nur besetzungstechnisch) gewachsene Band eben einfach verdammt viel richtig gemacht. Während es bei den geschäftigen Wienern gleich Anfang des kommenden Jahres ohne lange Pause mittels 'Junkyard' weitergehen wird, nimmt Bassist Florian Seyser für den Heavypop Adventkalenders das Zepter in die Hand und blickt stellvertretend für seine Bandkollegen auf das Jahr 2013 zurück - zumindest in vier von fünf Fällen.
Andrew Koji Shiraki alias Koji hat im Mai sein langerwartetes Debütalbum 'Crooked In My Mind' vorgelegt und ist derzeit als Supportact von Into It. Over It. durch Europa unterwegs. Klaus Zwinger hat sich vor dem Tourstop in der Wiener Arena mit dem Singer-Songwriter und umtriebigen Aktivisten getroffen, um sich über die aktuelle Tour, zahlreiche soziale Engagements und etwaige Zukunftsmusik zu unterhalten.
No, sadly the long-awaited British Theatre debut album wasn't released in 2013. But to see Mike Vennart and Richard "Gambler" nearly exactly three years after their last visit in Austria (back then they did an awesome and really memorable concert in the final days of the legendary Oceansize under kinda bizarre circumstances in Afflenz) backing Biffy Clyro on stage recalls what magnificent jobs they already did with their 'EP' and 'Dyed in the Wool Ghost' last year. So to bridge the hard waiting time unto we'll (hopefully!) hear the highly anticipated first full length from the duo in 2014, here's what they two recommend this year:
Münster scheint einfach ein verdammt gutes Pflaster für Bands zu sein. Neben Messer haben sich Käfer K mit 'Zu verwerfende Pläne' 2013 jedenfalls endgültig ins Rampenlicht gespielt, indem das Quartett zwischen Captain Planet und Adolar angesiedelt weiterhin wächst und konsequent ihr eigenes Ding durchzieht.
