Waiting for the debut album of the Goodtime Boys felt like an eternity. And as it turns out it was worth waiting: 'Rain' not only keeps the promises a number of EPs made since 2011, but elevates tehir qualities onto the next level. With outstanding songs like ‘Wallflower‘, ‘Life Moves‘, ‘Cloudbursts‘ or ‘Downpour‘ and songwriting that succeeds in expressing aggressiveness without losing a keen sense for grand melodies, with a spacious sound that sets itself apart from the genres sameyness, and lyrics that crawl beneath the skin. Hardcore can be so beautiful.
2014 couldn’t have started better for KMPFSPRT: „Jugend Mutiert“ easily lived up to the high expectations euphoric concert reviews and the „Das ist doch kein Name für ‚ne Band“ EP were suggesting. Close to eleven months later, the albums punkr rock hits lost nothing of their pressure and vigor. It doesn’t surprise, thatt 2015 seems to be off to an equally good start: the split single with Boysetsfire is ready to go, looks amazing, and serves a good cause. For the time being, guitar player David gives off some recommendations for 2014.
The reason why the year 2014 in Wolfgang Möstls personal music history only secondarily marks the year Killed by 9V Batteries were brought to an end invokes comparisons to the Beatles, hides itself very Sgt. Pepper-like behind a concept of nerdy homages, and celebrates a varied party of twelve Lo-Fi gems starting with its artwork: Mile Me Deaf probably have never been better than on their wonderfully easygoing collection of catchy tunes 'Holography'. One year after he helped bringing Sex Jams noiserock to the next level, Wolfgang Möstl continues to make no mistakes on his several playgrounds. And we’re still allowed to miss Killed by 9V Batteries.
After the two consecutive successes '‘Im Schwindel‘‘ and 'Die Unsichtbaren‘, 2014 had to be endured without a new album by Messer, but fortunately not without other releases: while Record Store Day ’14 showed the groups changeableness with 'TCM Tones‘, last months 'Ein Film ist zuende, nur ein Film‘ succeeded with its balancing act between art piece and driving rock improvisation. Either way: no Heavy Pop Advent calender without being kicked off by Messer!
Eine gefühlte Ewigkeit musste man auf das Debütalbum der Goodtime Boys warten. Eine Wartezeit, von der sich letztendlich jede Sekunde gelohnt hat: 'Rain' hält nicht nur alle Versprechungen, die seit 2011 über zahlreiche EPs abgegeben wurden, sondern hebt alle Qualitäten der Band dazu auf das nächste Level. Mit überragenden Songs wie 'Wallflower', 'Life Moves', 'Cloudbursts' oder 'Downpour'; ganz allgemein einem Songwriting, dem es gelingt Aggressivität niemals ohne ein immanentes Gespür für große Melodien auszudrücken; einem raumfüllenden Sound, der sich vom Genre-Einerlei dieser Tage abhebt; und Texten, die unter die Haut gehen. So - im wahrsten Sinne - schön kann Hardcore sein.
Der Grund, weswegen 2014 in Wolfgang Möstls umtriebiger Musikgechichte eventuell nur in zweiter Linie als jenes Jahr in Erinnerung bleiben wird, in dem Killed by 9V Batteries zu Grabe getragen wurden, bringt ihm Vergleiche mit den Beatles ein, versteckt sich Sgt. Pepper-getreu hinter einem Konzept voller nerdiger Reminiszenzen und feiert auf dem dazugehörigen Artwork bereits die abwechslungsreiche Party, zu der auch die dahinterliegenden 12 Lo-Fi-Songperlen aufrufen. Fakt ist: Mile Me Deaf waren vermutlich nie besser als auf dem wunderbar unangestrengt ausgeschüttelten Ohrwürmer-Sammelsurium 'Holography'. Fakt ist ebenso: Auch ein Jahr, nachdem er migeholfen hat den Noiserock der Sex Jams auf das nächste Level zu hieven, macht Wolfgang Möstl auf zahlreichen Spielwiesen weiterhin alles richtig. Und Killed by 9V Batteries darf man trotzdem vermissen.
Nach den beiden aufeinanderfolgenden Glanztaten 'Im Schwindel' und 'Die Unsichtbaren' musste 2014 zwar ohne neues Messer-Album auskommen, aber auch so tat sich genug bei den Münsteranern: die zum Quintett angewachsene Kombo reiste durch China, 'TCM Tones' führte zum Record Store Day einmal mehr die Wandelbarkeit der Gruppe vor und dem Hörspiel 'Ein Film war zuende, nur ein Film' gelang der Spagat zwischen Kunst-Expedition und treibender Rock-Improvisation fulminant. Aber sowieso: kein Heavy Pop Adventskalender ist komplett, wenn er nicht von Messer eröffnet wird.
Ein Sinnbild, wie die Musik von Dean Blunt funktioniert: sein zweites Soloalbum heißt 'Black Metal' und klingt genausowenig nach Blastbeats und Co., wie Songtitel ala 'Country', '50 Cent' oder 'Punk' Rückschklüsse auf ihre Gangart zulassen. Und vor allem: so konkret wie das bedingungslos konsequent eingefärbte Albumcover suggeriert ist hier ohnedies nichts.
