Courtney Barnett – End Of The Day (Music From the Film Anonymous Club)
Mit Warpaint-Schlagzeugerin Stella Mozgawa als sporadische Unterstützung hat Courtney Barnett den Soundtrack zur Dokumentation Anonymous Club aufgenommen und zum Quasi-Album End of the Day weitergedacht.
Selten konnte ein Beipackzettel den Charakter einer Platte derart adäquat und effektiv zusammenfassen wie hier: „Comprising 17 seamless improvisations which were originally created as part of score to the documentary ‚Anonymous Club‘, ‚End Of The Day‘ is a meditative, slow-burning and beautiful record, prioritising atmosphere, tone and texture over traditional song structures and melodic hooks. It’s a fearless and stunning turn for an artist who built her formidable reputation through profound lyricism and riff-based fireworks.“
Tatsächlich hat Barnett (die übrigens selbst das Thema der untermalten Doku darstellt) hier ein primär auf minimalistisches Gitarren-Geplänkel beschränktes, formfrei nahtlos ineinander fließendes Ambient-Dösen aufgenommen, das keinen konventionellen Strukturen oder Auftrittspunkten folgt, fassbare Ideen oder konkrete Motive im flächigen Wandern ignoriert, und als reiner Müßiggang praktisch keinerlei hängen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt.
Wiewohl End of the Day als kaum belangendes Hintergrund-Mäandern durchaus klar geht – und das angestrebte Ziel der Musikerin „nothing too maudlin, obvious, or instructive, nothing to tell the future audience how they should be feeling about Barnett’s life onscreen“ zu erzeugen, auch erfolgreich eingefangen hat. Ist man in der Stimmung für eine derartig passive Beschallung, ist das also überzeugende Funktionsmusik.
Nur: als separates Werk erschafft der Soundtrack so allerdings wenig relevanten Reiz.
