Already the self-titled debut from 2013 demonstrated that there was something outstanding brewing in Brisbane, thinking far outside the box of your regular post black metal. It doesn’t surprise that Relapse Records reeled in Hope Drone from Australia soon after: ‚Cloak of Ash‚ surpasses the big expectations effortless, and creates a dense, hypnotic maelstrom of monolithic heavyness that impresses with its unparalleled, pitch black atmosphere (and adding to all oft hat also has some breathtaking artwork). On day four of the Heavy Pop advent calender, Hope Drone tell us which albums impressed them the most in 2015.

Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - Yield to DespairTangled Thoughts of Leaving – [amazon_link id=“B012CN2INE“ target=“_blank“ ]Yield to Despair[/amazon_link]

Peege:

I had a lot of trepidation and very low expectations before I first listened to Yield to Despair. I felt previous TToL releases fell far too easily into strange jazz meltdowns where they would continually lose the pulse and really not ever get it back. The talent and musical knowledge was obvious but the application, for me, very lacking. With Yield to Despair, TToL have managed to find the missing pulse in the jazz breakdowns which certainly helps create the feeling and atmosphere the band are wanting to achieve.

Leviathan – Scar SightedLeviathan – [amazon_link id=“B00R4W2NH0″ target=“_blank“ ]Scar Sighted[/amazon_link]

Karl:

I was already looking forward to this record before having heard anything but after listening to the preview of All Tongues Towards I knew it was going to be a really strong Leviathan album. To me it harkens back to Massive Conspiracy Against All Life sound with a much grander scale than True Traitor but with an increase in death metal influences towards the start of the record and some of the most epic and melodic stuff Wrest has done on the latter half. This combined with all the idiosyncrasies you’d expect from a Leviathan record like creepy clean parts, noisy dissonant riffing and a variety of vocal stylings to compliment the core black metal sound sees Scar Sighted as one of the best albums of the year in my eyes.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Asunder, Sweet and Other DistressGodspeed You! Black Emperor – [amazon_link id=“B00TY18YSQ“ target=“_blank“ ]Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress[/amazon_link]

Christopher:

The first time I heard Asunder, Sweet and let it spill over into the crushing Piss Crowns Are Trebled, I was instantly hooked on this album. The grinding bass tone at the start of Piss Crowns is far heavier than I ever expected from this band, and the intensity of the string parts has me staring at my guitar, contemplating how to make it sound most like a violin. In the past, I have felt that GY!BE can stray into sections that are overly jubilant, which can distract from the darker and more intense passages. Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress maintains the requisite level of darkness at all times. It may not contain GY!BE’s most poignant moments (perhaps it is the jubilant sections that make those moments all the more powerful by contrast) but it is a moving album that has kept me company on many long nights.

Krallice - Ygg huurKrallice – [amazon_link id=“B0143VFWJ0″ target=“_blank“ ]Ygg huur[/amazon_link]

Francis:

This album came out of nowhere surprising alot of people. Whilst not as fluid and hypnotic as their previous releases, this is still a great record. I feel like it’s a condensed and sometimes more jarring experience than their previous releases.
The songs are relatively short and song structures can sometimes feel erratic which adds to the chaos. There is still melody in this album, albeit fleeting. The musicianship is amazing, and I find myself constantly zoning out on the interplay between the riffs and drums.
