Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: The Notwist

It is known that there might be up to six years between records by The Notwist; also that each and every second of waiting time between them is probably worth it. 'Close to the Glass' is another demonstration for this, by not only being a prime example for all their strenghts, but also being their most diverse and layered work to date. This isn’t the only thing that is nourishing for the next few years, The Notwist stay present even outside of their album: the so far limited edition only collection '[amazon_link id="B00QG15R6Y" target="_blank" ]The Messier Objects[/amazon_link]' gets a regular release soon, and on top of that there’s another tour pending (including a visit to Graz on March 25th 2015). Meanwhile, Markus Acher tells us his recommendations of the past months for the Heavy Pop advent calendar.

Records of the Year. Selected by: Gnarwolves

After the impressing EP marathon of the past years and a spontaneus detour into the business of brewing, Gnarwolves – probably the most outstanding hit machine on the gateway from pop to skate punk – let themselves be talked around to releasing their first full lenght. In our interview during their visit to Vienna, the Brighton three piece recommended us some records for the Heavy Pop advent calendar.

It’s awesome to hear the future of heavy rock music existing in a place that appeals to a metal aesthetic but doesn’t involve guitarsKayo Dot mastermind Toby Driver told us, referring to 'Want', the second LP by Wreck and Reference. Indeed the California based duo of Ignat Frege and Felix Skinner succeeded in perfecting their incredibly independent sound, and creating a maelstrom of an album that is as schizoid as it is unsettling, and gives of a fascinating disturbing atmosphere. Maybe 'Want' is a bit ahead of its time, right here and right now it works as the lurking, hautingly beautiful beast in the darkness under the bed of genre boundaries.

Toby Driver already has an idea where the next album will bring his band. Listening to their last album 'Coffins on Io', the most headstrong pop album of 2014, which Kayo Dot used to invent themselves anew, to expand their horizon over to spacestations floating trapped in an 80s timeloop, one hast o think: anything is possible. Until then Mr. Driver tells us which records accompanied him through the year 2014 – and we hope to see him and his band in Europe in 2015.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Fjørt

Okay, what kind of reckless style amalgam ist he opening title track? The mercilessly slaying 'Schnaiserkitt'? How epic in scope is the wave breaking 'Valhalla'? Fjort actually need no more than these three songs to leave the listener speechless, but they do it another seven times. Close to nine months after the release of 'D’accord' we still marvel at This Charming Man for their 6th signing sense; at the enormous explosion in performance, that wasn’t to be expected in this magnitude after the very promising introductory-round of 'Demontage', or that this record has indeed been mangled out of their instruments by a three-piece wrecking ball.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Watter

'This World' works as interface between the acoustic landscapes of Grails and Slint, the two closely related bands that qualify Watter as – excuse the marketing-speak – supergroup. First and foremost though, Zak Riles, Tyler Trotter and Britt Walford made their debut a beautiful and mystically surreal voyage through the bluring borderlands of post- and krautrock. To ease the waiting time for their Euro tour at the start of 2015 (with dates in Linz on Feb 12th and Vienna on Feb 14th), Mr. Riles tell us about his favourite records of the year for the Heavy Pop advent calendar.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Black Map

First you may think: writing about Black Map of course means to write about Dredg, Far and The Trophy Fire, if only because „…And We Explode“ bears trademarks of the three other bands Mark Engles, Chris Robyn und Ben Flanagan are involved with. But it comes as a bit of a surprise, how effortless the three-headed powerhouse succeeds in combining the straight walk in direction of atmospheric alternative rock, the constant flirt with grounded stadium-sound and the steadfast traction of meaty hits. And yeah, in the end actually it works perfectly without even mentioning their other prominent playgrounds.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: The Tidal Sleep

von am 7. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

First and foremost, The Tidal Sleep made their homework in contemporary US-hardcore; though 'Vorstellungskraft' foreshadowed some of the things 'Keep You' succeeded in months later, but without the same radical break with their own past. On their second album, the Mannheim/Karlsruhe/Leipzig/Munich/Berlin five-piece cuts of the corners between the pressure of their emotional hardcore and the loftiness of their beautiful post rock as impressing as they do it intense. And most probably it didn’t happen like this, but we like the thought: Pianos Become the Teeth listened to the 36 minutes of this record and realized, that they have to change up their game urgently – because no other hardcore band in 2014 managed to converge elegiac beauty with no-holds-barred brutality.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Amen Dunes

Compared to his previous work, the album has very structurized pieces, but they lose nothing of their elusive magicMesser vocalist Hendrik Otremba told us, and hits the nail on the head. Not only has Damon McMahon – together with his bandmates Jordi Wheeler and Parker Kindred, as well as many guests like Efrim Menuck, Colin Stetson and Elias Bender Rønnenfelt – succeeded in making 'Love' their best Album so far, but a beautifully surreal, psychedelic masterpiece with timeless qualities.
