Whoever thought Oozing Wound needed to regenerate after last years raging effort 'Retrash' could not have reckoned with the overflowing energy of the Chicago three-piece: not only did the jewel in the crown that is Thrill Jockey shine with an incredible split with Black Pus and a mean Adult Swim single, 2014 also saw an added ounce of heaviness behind the glorious Artwork of their second album 'Earth Suck'. Oozing Wound don’t leave much to be desired, except for maybe the one thing of being able to see them taking apart European stages.
'This World' works as interface between the acoustic landscapes of Grails and Slint, the two closely related bands that qualify Watter as – excuse the marketing-speak – supergroup. Darf man die Phrase vom Erwachsenwerden bemühen?
Wenn House mit Black Metal penetriert dann entsteht das, was Drew Daniel (Matmos) mit Kollaborateuren wie Antony, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), Terence Hannum (Locrian), der zweiten Hälfte von Matmos, M.C. Schmidt und Owen Gaertner (Horse Lords) als ein profanisiertes Metal-Tanz-Album produziert hat.
Ein unveröffentlichtes Album aus der gemeinhin schwächsten Phase des Man in Black, knappe 10 Jahre nach dem Tod des Man in Black ausgegraben. Skepsis durfte da die Vorfreude durchaus überschatten - 'Out Among the Stars' nun umso überraschender mit seinen Qualitäten aufzeigen kann.
'This Is Our Punk-Rock...' war als Titel bereits vergeben, hätte aber ohnedies zu kurz gegriffen. Auf ihrem siebenten Studioalbum versammelt das Kollektiv um Godspeed You! Black Emperor-Vorstand Efrim Menuck einen Malstrom aus wüsten Punksongs in Postrockweiten samt heavy Metalexplosionen, scharfkantigen Gitarrenkonstrukten und brodelnden Violinenstacheln, fiebrigen Droneaufbauten und wilden Noiseabfahrten: strahlende Folkrockdiamanten und übermächtige Hymnen sind das. 'Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything', wahrhaftig!
One thing Duane Denison definitely did not experience in 2013 was boredom. There was the (once again) reunion of noiserock-overlords The Jesus Lizard or the foundation of supergroup The Unsamble (featuring Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten and Silver Jews' Brian Kotzur) – but first and foremost there was 'Oddfellows', the might-as-well-be comeback and possibly best work by the even superer group Tomahawk. And thanks to Denison's varied choices for his records of the year and the HeavyPop Advent calendar, there's no place for boredom here, either.
Auch die Panem-Filmreihe setzt auf das gängige Schema fetten Hollywoodblockbustern einen prestigeträchtigen Soundtrack zur Seite zu Stellen - und fährt im zweiten Anlauf mit einer Hinwendung zu zahlreichen Vertretern der oberen Indie- und Alternative Riege wieder gut damit.
Seine Kirchengemeinschaft prangert neben stilisierter religiöser Symbolik am Cover, die Songs tragen Titel wie 'Come Lord Jesus', 'God is Good' oder 'O God': Ex-Thrice-Frontmann Dustin Kensrue lässt auf seinem (je nach Zählweise) dritten Soloalbum von vornherein keine falschen Erwartungen aufkommen.
