Refused drehen zur Selbstbestätigung nach der unsterblichen Kür eine überaus souverän zu gefallen wissende Ehrenrunde, die außer der Band wohl dennoch sonst kaum jemand gebraucht hätte: 'Freedom' macht (erstaunlicherweise) vieles richtig, nur um letzten Endes doch vor allem als enorm abivalentes Dokument des Scheiterns dazustehen.
Wer den Verlust von Oceansize 4 Jahre nach deren (unrühmlichen) Ende immer noch nicht überwunden hat, wird sich auf dem Debütalbum vom ehemaligen Frontmann der britischen Nischenlieblingen sofort wie zu Hause fühlen. Darüber hinaus führt 'The Demon Joke' aber auch vor, das Mike Vennart's Songwriting an den Freiheiten von British Theatre und mehr noch den Erfahrungen als Tourgitarrist von Biffy Clyro gewachsen ist.

Maybe 'Want' is a bit ahead of its time, right here and right now it works as the lurking, hautingly beautiful beast in the darkness under the bed of genre boundaries.
Toby Driver already has an idea where the next album will bring his band. Listening to their last album 'Coffins on Io', the most headstrong pop album of 2014, which Kayo Dot used to invent themselves anew, to expand their horizon over to spacestations floating trapped in an 80s timeloop, one hast o think: anything is possible. Until then Mr. Driver tells us which records accompanied him through the year 2014 – and we hope to see him and his band in Europe in 2015.
First you may think: writing about Black Map of course means to write about Dredg, Far and The Trophy Fire, if only because „…And We Explode“ bears trademarks of the three other bands Mark Engles, Chris Robyn und Ben Flanagan are involved with. But it comes as a bit of a surprise, how effortless the three-headed powerhouse succeeds in combining the straight walk in direction of atmospheric alternative rock, the constant flirt with grounded stadium-sound and the steadfast traction of meaty hits. And yeah, in the end actually it works perfectly without even mentioning their other prominent playgrounds.
Die erste Pink Floyd-Veröffentlichung seit 20 Jahren ist kein derartiger Griff ins Klo, wie dass das Gros der geißelnden Kritiken nahelegt, aber als selbstzitierende Resteverwertung nicht zuletzt im Kontext der musikhostorischen Bedeutung dieser Band doch vor allem: unnötig.
"Es ist eine gute Rockplatte". Das mag für The Voice-Sidekick Gavin Rossdale durchaus so erscheinen. Außerhalb seiner Band wird das sechste Studioalbum seiner wiederbelebten Kombo aber wohl vor allem als bocklangweilige Anbiederung an weichgespülte Alternative Rock-Formatradiosender gehört werden.
