Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Andy Gibbs (Thou)

Compared to their insane year 2014, Thou took it relatively easy this year: besides a split with Great Falls, the Adult Swim single Eyehatethou and their two RSD gala releases (seriously, Only You Deserve Conceit and their bows before Nirvana on Whatever Nevermind are up their with the best they’ve done), their second cooperation with The Body left distincitve marks. You, Whom I Have Always Hated completes Released From Love in an impressive way, and raises hope that this ingenious combination of powers might happen again. In the meantime, guitarist Andy Gibbs compiles for the eight day oft he Heavy Pop advent calendar.

FKA twigs – M3LL155XFKA twigs – [amazon_link id=“B014EISPGY“ target=“_blank“ ]M3LL155X[/amazon_link]

I do my best to keep up with the new tide of futuristic R&B that’s coming out these days, but I never had really gotten deep in FKA twigs until hearing this EP.
The production is mind-bending, but beneath that are some serious songwriting chops and hooks that stay with you. Come for the occult dark noise, stay for the sultry vocals.

False – UntitledCloud Rat - QliphothFalse – [amazon_link id=“B015OHFWFQ“ target=“_blank“ ]Untitled[/amazon_link] &
Cloud Rat – [amazon_link id=“B00YJLAO20″ target=“_blank“ ]Qliphoth[/amazon_link]

Knowing the people behind both these bands has been an extremely rewarding experience, both on a  musical and personal level. I’m grouping them together here because
both records are clearly their best work yet and also very much an ALBUM instead of just a collection of songs. I just can’t believe how on top of their game both Cloud Rat and False are on these records.

Björk - VulnicuraBjörk – [amazon_link id=“B00SKFJGMA“ target=“_blank“ ]Vulnicura[/amazon_link]

The heaviest record of the year. Just total devastation. I do not recommend putting this album on in the background as it requires total attention and is too emotional for a casual listen. Possibly her best work to date.

S.B.S.M – Joy Rage EPS.B.S.MJoy/Rage EP

A shrill blast of noise and bombastic drumming out of an Oakland punk scene that has been on fire the past few years.

Virusse – Bouquet De SableVirusseBouquet De Sable

One-woman meditative electronic darkness with dreamy vocals on top. I first really listened to this record while driving through Eastern Utah for the first time, which made for an incredible visual component.
