Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Thou

von am 24. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

Thou from Baton Rouge are the mightiest doom force on the planet for some time now, as their spotless, overwhelming discography impressivly proves. And still, 2014 will be remembered as a unprecedented peak in the bands history, with one stroke of genious after the other: 'Heathen' and 'The Sacrifice' and 'Released from Love', the first of two epic collaboration with The Body, which will find it's imposing continuation in 2015. And while a visit to Europe seems to remain a pipe dream for now, Thou do the honors and take care of day 24 in the Heavy Pop advent calendar: guitarist Andy Gibbs presents some of his albums of the year.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: The Notwist

von am 23. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

It is known that there might be up to six years between records by The Notwist; also that each and every second of waiting time between them is probably worth it. 'Close to the Glass' is another demonstration for this, by not only being a prime example for all their strenghts, but also being their most diverse and layered work to date. This isn’t the only thing that is nourishing for the next few years, The Notwist stay present even outside of their album: the so far limited edition only collection '[amazon_link id="B00QG15R6Y" target="_blank" ]The Messier Objects[/amazon_link]' gets a regular release soon, and on top of that there’s another tour pending (including a visit to Graz on March 25th 2015). Meanwhile, Markus Acher tells us his recommendations of the past months for the Heavy Pop advent calendar.

Melt-Banana did not promise too much: with 'Longhena' Gridlink released the best grind record of the year, and maybe also the last act of their peaking carreer. Jon Chang not only found the time to tell us about his favourite records of this past year 2014 for the Heavy Pop advent calender, he’s also giving out presents left and right: countless demos from all phases of Gridlink are on his Dropboxand his Facebook page is always worth a look.

Toby Driver already has an idea where the next album will bring his band. Listening to their last album 'Coffins on Io', the most headstrong pop album of 2014, which Kayo Dot used to invent themselves anew, to expand their horizon over to spacestations floating trapped in an 80s timeloop, one hast o think: anything is possible. Until then Mr. Driver tells us which records accompanied him through the year 2014 – and we hope to see him and his band in Europe in 2015.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Watter

von am 12. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

'This World' works as interface between the acoustic landscapes of Grails and Slint, the two closely related bands that qualify Watter as – excuse the marketing-speak – supergroup. First and foremost though, Zak Riles, Tyler Trotter and Britt Walford made their debut a beautiful and mystically surreal voyage through the bluring borderlands of post- and krautrock. To ease the waiting time for their Euro tour at the start of 2015 (with dates in Linz on Feb 12th and Vienna on Feb 14th), Mr. Riles tell us about his favourite records of the year for the Heavy Pop advent calendar.

Das Jahr in Platten mit: Watter

Das Jahr in Platten mit: Watter

von am 12. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Keeper

von am 12. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

At the end of this thriumphal past year in doom, a two-piece from California stands out from the heap of excellent releases in the genre – with their debut of all things. And the 46 minues served don’t only work as a first demonstration of talent for Keeper, even in this early state the band succeeds in articulating their hate and disgust for the world between perfectly formed crust and noise-innuendos. Jacob Lee and Penny Keats play this nihilistic mixture from close to scratch, and instantly positioned themselves as one of the most unapologetic current genre bands.

Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: The Tidal Sleep

von am 7. Dezember 2014 in Adventskalender 2014

First and foremost, The Tidal Sleep made their homework in contemporary US-hardcore; though 'Vorstellungskraft' foreshadowed some of the things 'Keep You' succeeded in months later, but without the same radical break with their own past. On their second album, the Mannheim/Karlsruhe/Leipzig/Munich/Berlin five-piece cuts of the corners between the pressure of their emotional hardcore and the loftiness of their beautiful post rock as impressing as they do it intense. And most probably it didn’t happen like this, but we like the thought: Pianos Become the Teeth listened to the 36 minutes of this record and realized, that they have to change up their game urgently – because no other hardcore band in 2014 managed to converge elegiac beauty with no-holds-barred brutality.

Compared to his previous work, the album has very structurized pieces, but they lose nothing of their elusive magicMesser vocalist Hendrik Otremba told us, and hits the nail on the head. Not only has Damon McMahon – together with his bandmates Jordi Wheeler and Parker Kindred, as well as many guests like Efrim Menuck, Colin Stetson and Elias Bender Rønnenfelt – succeeded in making 'Love' their best Album so far, but a beautifully surreal, psychedelic masterpiece with timeless qualities.
