Als es schon beinahe so schien, als würde Trent Reznor sein Versprechen (nämlich drei Jahre nach Hesitation Marks neues Material seines Flagschiffs zu kredenzen) brechen, wurde es auf einmal doch noch ein turbulentes 2016 für Nine Inch Nails.
Auf seiner dritten - via Cut Surface erschienen - Platte zählt Bruch seine Dämonen, die er rief. Ein knackiges Album mit Songs, die nie länger als 4 Minuten dauern: Im Herzschlag-Rhythmus mein Album des Winters 2016.
Nach der grandiosen 2015er Sternstunde The Demon Joke verlagern Mike Vennart und Richard A. Ingram im Verbund unter dem British Theatre-Banner mit Mastery ihre Stärken deutlicher hinein in die Elektronik und tauchen damit seit Jahren geschärfte Trademarks in ein neues Licht. Womit British Theatre sich nicht nur bereits auf ihrem lange herbeigesehnten Debüt einen völlig eigenständigen Sound erarbeitet haben, sondern auch mit einigen Songwriting-Sternstunden auftrumpfen: Über allem thront Capra - nicht weniger als eine der schönsten Nummern, die Ingram und Vennart projektübergreifend jemals geschaffen haben. Allein schon wegen dieser 5 Minuten purer Erhabenheit sollte man sich beeilen, und sich die wenigen noch vorhandenen Vinyl-Exemplare von Mastery nicht entgehen lassen. Weil noch besser: Man wird drumherum mit einem der faszinierendsten, detailliertesten und emotional komplexesten Alben des Jahres belohnt.
A lot of other bands probably would have crumbled under the experiences Crippled Black Phoenix were going through for the past few years. But Justin Greaves? Bares his teeth and pushes ever onward with projects like Se Delan, his works for soundtracks – and above all Criplled Black Phoenix, where he tightened the reins, leading to what eventually turned out to be the prog juggernaut‘s most ructious album to date. Bronze is a dark tour de force, that managed to connect its many dots – from the monstrously grinding riffs to Daniel Äghide’s impulsive vocals – to an uncompromising triumphal procession. The picture of the mythical bird rising from its ashes probably never fit Greaves band better than right now, and their (not so) secret motto - Rise up and fight! - has transitioned into way of life with the work around, towards and on Bronze at the latest.
„This album features so many memorable guitar harmonies and rivals Inter Arma for doom(ish) album of the year.“ – high praise from Khemmis, who talk about Chained to Obivion, Sprit Adrift’s debut album. An impressive premiere nobody even mildly interested in all things doom should've ignore (mea culpa!), and one that even was projected a few months early by the similarly impressive Behind – Beyond. Even more impressive: Spirit Adrift is the brainchild of sole member Nate Garrett, who expressly underlines his capability here with stellar songwriting, crushing instrumental skills and an sheer excellent vocal performance. So thanks a thousand times for the hint, Khemmis! And while you let the 5 songs on Chained to Oblivion majestically creep under your skin, take some time to reflect on Sprit Adrift’s final account of 2016.
On Hunted, Khemmis can keep all the promises their formidable debut Absolution gave 15 months ago, and let fans of Pallbearer and Crypt Sermon alike lick their tongues: nobody in 2016 managed to bridge the distance of epic traditional doom and grand melodies better than the band from Denver, CO. Thus it comes as no surprise, that the four-piece managed to storm the upper ranks oft he end oft he year charts by Decibel magazine. Hard to tell, to which heights the rapidly evolving Khemmis might rise in the years to come. But it sure will be a pleasure to witness.
Simplified, black Rock’n’Roll to the bones is what the press release already told us very apt about Hodja in times of their debut The Band, but what it didn’t tell us, was with how much soul, gospel, blues and feeling the multinational band charges their sound up with. Besides Reverend Shine Snake Oil Co. some might think about Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart, but in the end, the three-piece is cooking their own soup, and makes albums, that feel as if you’re right their with them, participating in their recording voodoo-sessions. This years Halos walks along that line consequently, and manages to effortlessly shake out some immediate sweating hits like Gazelles. And as soon, as Hodja slow down a bit, and draw back into invincible melancholic songs like Broken Engines, the gem Halos becomes more than the sum of ist parts.
Dass Blue & Lonesome postwendend in die Top Ten der Jahrescharts des US-Rolling Stone geschossen ist, ist freilich ein wenig übereuphorisch (bzw. symptomatisch für die konservative Zeitschrift an sich), aber es stimmt schon: Besser als auf ihrem ersten Coveralbum überhaupt waren Keith Richards, Mick Jagger und Co. seit Dekaden nicht mehr.

Seit The Men 2014 auf Tomorrow's Hits einer leichtgängigen Vision des klassischen Heartland Rock auf den Fersen waren, ist es im wahrsten Sinne ruhig um die ansonsten so eklektischen Vielveröffentlicher geworden.
