Nichts gegen all die anderen Spielwiesen des Justin Pearson - aber Retox ist mutmaßlich die beste unter all den niemals enttäuschenden Bands, bei denen der 38 jährige seit 'New Errections' seine Finger im Spiel hat. Die zusätzliche Schippe an kickendem Rock steht dem Grindcorederwisch jedenfalls nicht nur hervorragend, sondern bescherte 'YPLL' neben der umwerfenden Gitarrenarbeit von Michael Crain dazu auch potentielle Genre-Hitgranaten ala 'Soviet Reunion' oder 'Greasy Palm'. Richtig explosiv im Live-Gewand. Im 20. Artikelfenster des Heavypop Adeventskalender klärt Pearson über seine Platten des Jahres auf.
Der Hype zum Abschluss des Jahres kommt aus Finnland, hat sein erstes Album von Converge-Gitarrist/Godcity-Vorstand Kurt Ballou produzieren lassen und mit 10 unkomplizierten Pop-Ohrwürmern vollgepackt, die sich geschickt als Rocksongs verkleidet haben. So ganz gehalten kann damit jedoch nicht werden, was da derzeit allerorts von 'Climax' versprochen wird.
Day 18 of the HeavyPop Advent calendar brings us France's most intense band. Usually friends of rapid-fire releases (three and a half records over the course of five years) Lyon's Celeste took nearly three years to meticulously craft their Opus Magnum 'Animale(s)', and every second of work shows on their pitch-black conceptual work of art. Never before did Celeste sound more detailed, more coherent – in short: better. It was hard to imagine after the already outstanding 'Morte(s) Nee(s)', but Celeste outdid themselves again.
So ganz ohne Sorgenfalten hat man dem ersten Melt-Banana Album seit knapp sechs Jahren, dazu dem ersten in Duo-Besetzung samt Drumcomputer und eingefügten Bassspuren, vielleicht nicht entgegengesehen. Aber was machen Sängerin Yako und Ausnahmegitarrist Agata? Legen als siebentes Studiowerk einfach eines der stärksten Werke der Bandgeschichte vor - 'Fetch' ist nichts weniger als ein brillantes Melt-Banana Feuerwerk der Extraklasse! Da stört eigentlich nur die Befürchtung bis zum nächsten Album wieder über ein halbes Jahrzehnt warten zu müssen. Einstweilen blicken die beiden Japaner am 17. Tag des Heavypop Adventskalender auf das Jahr 2013 zurück...und auch in die Zukunft.
The first Melt-Banana album after six years – furthermore the first album as duo with synthetic Bass- and Drumtracks – could have been anticipated with mixed feelings. In the light of his band Disappears not only releasing the 'Kone'-EP that rose expectations for 2013, but consequently lifting their sound onto the next level with their following album 'Era' , Brian Case telling us about his favourite records of this past year is especially interesting. "Their best album so far" is the consensus on 'Era' elsewhere - which can only be repeated on day 13 of the Heavy Pop Advent calendar.

Am zweiten Sonntag werden die Regeln des Heavypop-Adventskalender ein wenig umgangen: weil British Theatre 2013 (leider) kein Album am Start hatten und trotzdem nach ihren Favoriten befragt werden. Aber Mike Vennart und Richard "Gambler" Ingram unlängst und (beinahe exakt 3 Jahre nach dem unter seltsamen Umständen stattfindenden letzten Oceansize-Österreich Besuch der beiden) als Rückendeckung von Biffy Clyro auftrumpfen zu sehen hat wieder in Erinnerung gerufen welche wunderbaren Kleinode das Duo mit ihrer 'EP' und 'Dyed in the Wool Ghost' im letzten Jahr ablieferten. Auf kaum ein (hoffentlich im nächsten Jahr) erscheinendes Album ist die Vorfreude jedenfalls derart groß wie das Debüt aus dem Hause British Theatre.
No, sadly the long-awaited British Theatre debut album wasn't released in 2013. But to see Mike Vennart and Richard "Gambler" nearly exactly three years after their last visit in Austria (back then they did an awesome and really memorable concert in the final days of the legendary Oceansize under kinda bizarre circumstances in Afflenz) backing Biffy Clyro on stage recalls what magnificent jobs they already did with their 'EP' and 'Dyed in the Wool Ghost' last year. So to bridge the hard waiting time unto we'll (hopefully!) hear the highly anticipated first full length from the duo in 2014, here's what they two recommend this year:
40 Minuten Oldschool-Post-Hardcore-Songs bei 80 Minuten Gesamtspielzeit: Self Defense Family sind keine gewöhnliche Band - und das heiß erwartete 'Try Me' nach unzähligen (Split)Singles und EP-Vorboten natürlich auch kein herkömmliches Debütalbum. Auch ungeachtet der Tatsache, dass es mit einem kleinen Perspektivenwechsel schon der vierte Langspieler der im steten Wandel befindlichen Kollektives um Ausnahmevorstand (, Sänger und "personality") Patrick Kindlon ist. Wen das schon verwirrt, den könnte das aus der Zeit gefallene 'Try Me' nun endgültig aus dem Konzept bringen.
