Matt Pike sieht auf aktuellen Promofotos nicht nur deutlich gesünder aus als die letzten Jahre über, sondern hat sich sogar dazu überreden lassen, sich permanent ein T-Shirt über den schlacksigen Körper zu werfen. Auf dem siebenten Album seiner Band bleibt dagegen weitestgehend alles beim Alten: High in Fire zementieren mit einem wuchtigen Mehr an Melodiösität ihren Status als moderne Klassiker der Metal.
Dass der zur Gleichförmigkeit neigende, dunkle Melancholie-Minimalismus seiner Stammband nicht alles für Jamie Smith sein kann, stellt der 26 Jährige Londoner bereits mit dem titelentsprechenden, schillernden Artwork von 'In Colour' klar. Die dazugehörigen elf Songs seines Debütalbums entwickeln sich folgerichtig auch zu einem vielfältigen Stilamalgam, dessen Ursprung im The xx-Sound transzendent bleibt.
Courtney Barnett hat auf ihrem wunderbar slackerhafter umherstreunenden Debüt nicht nur den Albumtitel des Jahres auf Lager, sondern auch einige der schlagfertigsten Textzeilen der letzten Zeit. Dass das Songwriting an sich da nicht immer mithalten kann, ist deswegen auch beinahe halb so wild.
Ty Segall empfiehlt sich auf 'Mr. Face' als Innovator der 3D-Szene, tut hier im Grunde aber vor allem vier Songs lang, was er längt besser als alle anderen kann: er wärmt Erinnerungen an 60s und 70s entlang seines unfehlbar wirkenden Songwriter-Laufbandes auf.
Thou from Baton Rouge are the mightiest doom force on the planet for some time now, as their spotless, overwhelming discography impressivly proves. And still, 2014 will be remembered as a unprecedented peak in the bands history, with one stroke of genious after the other: 'Heathen' and 'The Sacrifice' and 'Released from Love', the first of two epic collaboration with The Body, which will find it's imposing continuation in 2015. Okay, what kind of reckless style amalgam ist he opening title track? The mercilessly slaying 'Schnaiserkitt'? How epic in scope is the wave breaking 'Valhalla'? Fjort actually need no more than these three songs to leave the listener speechless, but they do it another seven times. Close to nine months after the release of 'D’accord' we still marvel at This Charming Man for their 6th signing sense; at the enormous explosion in performance, that wasn’t to be expected in this magnitude after the very promising introductory-round of 'Demontage', or that this record has indeed been mangled out of their instruments by a three-piece wrecking ball.
2014 couldn’t have started better for KMPFSPRT: „Jugend Mutiert“ easily lived up to the high expectations euphoric concert reviews and the „Das ist doch kein Name für ‚ne Band“ EP were suggesting. Close to eleven months later, the albums punkr rock hits lost nothing of their pressure and vigor. It doesn’t surprise, thatt 2015 seems to be off to an equally good start: the split single with Boysetsfire is ready to go, looks amazing, and serves a good cause.
