Travis – Avalon
Die als zusätzlicher Hingucker für die jüngste US-Tour von Travis veröffentlichte Standalone-Single Avalon stammt aus den Sessions zu deren jüngsten Studioalbum L.A. Times.
Die so beschwingt und catchy mitnehmenden 140 Sekunden der (mit leicht folkloristischem Kolorit in der Melodie schunkelnde und im klassischen, bittersüß-niedlichen Travis-Sound daherkommende) Nummer zementiert nebenbei auch den 2023 entstandenen Eindruck, dass die Selektion und das Sequencing eines der elementarsten Probleme des zehnten Langspielers der Briten darstellen. Denn Avalon ist ebenso simpel wie effektiv gestrickt (und hat über das Schlagzeugspiel in der sicherlich überschaubaren Tiefe auch ein paar nette kleine Ideen zu bieten, um die Trademarks reizvoll zu halten) und hätte dem so variabel angelegten L.A. Times als kurzer Schub der kurzweiligen Vertrautheit keineswegs geschadet. Im Gegenteil!
„And we sailed in irons for 14 years/ Upon treacherous waters uncharted/ And finally when land appeared/ We were right back to where we got started“ singt Fran Healy eine wie lange Zeit schon vertraute Melodie und erzählt daneben ausladend über die Hintergründe der sich fast wie eine B-Seite der goldenen Travis-Ära anfühlende Single:
„I owned a small sailing boat for a couple of years while in LA and wrote some songs in it. ‘Avalon’ is one of those songs. ‘Valentine’ on ’10 Songs’ was another. So, Catalina island is an island off the coast of Los Angeles. Its main port is called Avalon and is a sailing destination from LA, so I was determined to sail there. At the time of writing the song, I was learning all about the terminology of sailing and so the first verse talks of “clews” and “head” and “foot”… The second verse mentions the “first mate” and “the captain” and “hard-a-lee” which is when a boat makes a turn into the wind. In the song the real place of Avalon becomes mythologized and the journey to it, taking 14 years, is a nod to part of our journey as a band and the realization that the destination, this mythological place, was in reality, the journey all along.”
